The department engages in teaching, research, and outreach as core professional functions. Its program serves as an educational hub, research facility, and information resource for food science across North Carolina and beyond. The department hosts two specialized research facilities: the Southeast Dairy Foods Research Center and the Center for Advanced Processing and Packaging Studies. Students can pursue coursework and research in diverse fields including biochemistry, food engineering, microbiology, nutritional sciences, and processing technologies. Faculty and staff focus their strategic efforts on key priorities: enhancing food safety and preventing foodborne illnesses, supporting food production and business development, advancing educational methods, and promoting health-focused food solutions.
