The Pathology Concentration Area for graduate studies involves molecular and cellular research across diverse fields such as infectious disease mechanisms, cancer biology, toxicology, blood disorders, and immune system studies. Investigative methods incorporate molecular biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, and advanced microscopy techniques, using both cell cultures and whole organisms. Pathology students concentrate on one or more specialized domains within these research areas. Each student develops a customized academic plan that aligns with their professional goals while fulfilling faculty-mandated coursework. Required studies cover advanced histopathology, toxicological pathology, bird diseases, and seminar-based training in clinical, postmortem, and surgical pathology. Students, in consultation with their advisors, may select supplementary courses from extensive university offerings. Before graduating, candidates must prove diagnostic pathology proficiency through formal examinations.
Students are accepted into the Comparative Biomedical Sciences program based on their academic records (GPA) as undergraduates and/or as veterinary or medical students, letters of recommendation, and expression of interest in comparative biomedical research. GRE scores are not required, but students can choose to submit them with their application. Scores will be used only to support an application and will not be used to determine a student’s admission to the program. For the Ph.D. program, special consideration will be given to students who have had research experience (either an M.S. degree or other laboratory experience), especially in a biomedical discipline, or students who are completing strong clinical residency programs.
