Individuals require spaces for dwelling, employment, recreation, education, worship, gatherings, governance, commerce, dining - encompassing both private and public areas, interior and exterior environments, from individual rooms to entire structures, complexes, communities, and urban centers. Architects are skilled practitioners specializing in the creative and technical aspects of structural design, certified to safeguard community well-being by translating these requirements into conceptual designs and subsequently transforming them into feasible construction plans. Contemporary architectural professionals must address not only conventional design considerations but also evolving priorities including universal access, historic preservation and adaptive reuse of existing structures, environmental sustainability, and the development of rapidly growing metropolitan areas.
For architecture licensure in North Carolina and other U.S. jurisdictions, BEDA program graduates (students completing four-year architecture studies) must undertake either an additional fifth year in a Bachelor of Architecture curriculum or a two-year Master of Architecture program. NC State University provides both of these professionally accredited degree options. The concluding steps toward professional certification involve completing supervised practical experience and successfully passing the Architectural Registration Examination.
