This master's program qualifies you for professional licensure as a speech-language pathologist. You'll study prevention techniques, evaluation methods, and treatment approaches for communication and swallowing disorders, while learning to incorporate research into evidence-based clinical work. Students can choose to complete a thesis for those focused on advanced research. To develop the necessary expertise for speech-language pathology practice across diverse clinical settings and patient needs, professionals must demonstrate competencies in five key areas: communication, motor skills, cognitive abilities, sensory perception, and social behavior. The curriculum covers the nature of speech, language, hearing, and communication differences along with swallowing disorders - including their causes, characteristics, and related anatomical, physiological, acoustic, psychological, developmental, linguistic, and cultural factors. You'll learn assessment and intervention strategies for communication and swallowing disorders, with consideration of their anatomical, developmental, linguistic, and cultural aspects.
