This master's program qualifies you for professional licensure as a speech-language pathologist. You'll study prevention techniques, evaluation methods, and treatment approaches for communication and swallowing disorders, while learning to incorporate research into evidence-based clinical work. Students can choose to complete a thesis for those focused on advanced research. To develop the necessary expertise for speech-language pathology practice across diverse clinical settings and patient needs, professionals must demonstrate competencies in five key areas: communication, motor skills, cognitive abilities, sensory perception, and social behavior. The curriculum covers the nature of speech, language, hearing, and communication differences along with swallowing disorders - including their causes, characteristics, and related anatomical, physiological, acoustic, psychological, developmental, linguistic, and cultural factors. You'll learn assessment and intervention strategies for communication and swallowing disorders, with consideration of their anatomical, developmental, linguistic, and cultural aspects.

Qualification Requirements

Each year, NYU Steinhardt's Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders welcomes several dozen college graduates from science and other liberal arts backgrounds from across the country to join its MS program. Applicants must have been conferred a bachelor's degree prior to their first semester of enrollment in order to apply to the MS program.

If you do not have a background in communicative sciences and disorders, you may be required to take additional foundational course work. All foundation courses are necessary for New York State licensure and ASHA certification.
It is recommended that applicants meet at least one of the following grade point average (GPA) requirements, based on a 4.0 scale:

A minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA for baccalaureate studies
A minimum 3.2 GPA in any communicative sciences and disorders foundation courses you have taken

You must have the equivalent of a regionally accredited four-year US bachelor's degree before beginning your studies at NYU Steinhardt to be considered for admission.
