Advance your aspirations as a professional string player by blending high-level training in solo, ensemble, and orchestral performance with academic studies and NYC performance opportunities. Weekly private sessions with our distinguished faculty and specialized repertoire classes will refine your solo technique and teaching skills. Customize your education with two foundational courses in music research and history, six performance-focused classes (including private lessons, ensembles, chamber groups, workshops, and string repertoire), plus three electives in areas like music theory, arts management, the music industry, audio technology, or other specialized interests. You'll develop expertise in interpreting performance traditions, both classical and modern, that shape repertoire from the 18th to 21st centuries.

Qualification Requirements

Basic competence in music theory and history is a prerequisite for all graduate degree programs in music. Entering graduate students are required to complete a music theory entrance exam and meet history coursework requirements. Based on exam results and review of the student's transcript, up to 8 points of remedial music theory and/or history coursework may be required. Remedial courses cannot be used to meet degree requirements.

You must have the equivalent of a regionally accredited four-year US bachelor's degree before beginning your studies at NYU Steinhardt to be considered for admission.
