Our Near Eastern Studies MA program provides specialized tracks in advanced language studies, international relations, and museum studies, alongside a collaborative Global Journalism MA and a Library Science dual degree. We maintain strong partnerships with the Middle Eastern Studies Department, which administers an independent Ph.D. curriculum.
The curriculum emphasizes the region's modern political economy, cultural dynamics, and historical foundations. Students explore contemporary history, political systems, and specialized subjects aligned with faculty expertise. Current research focuses encompass: economic and political rights, legal-social frameworks, gender studies, Arabic literature, Persian literary traditions, urban anthropology in Arab contexts, Ottoman and Arab governance structures, Egyptian societal evolution, and modern Iranian/Central Asian studies. The program also features coursework on classical Islamic civilization, ancient Near Eastern studies, and pre-modern philosophy.
Language acquisition receives particular emphasis, with cutting-edge instruction in Arabic, Persian, Hebrew, Turkish, Hindi/Urdu, and ancient regional languages. Numerous students supplement their studies through intensive summer language programs, either domestically or internationally.
The International Relations concentration within our Near Eastern Studies MA equips graduates for professional, academic, and policy-oriented careers. This specialization develops regional expertise for positions in governmental agencies, research institutions, international organizations, corporate sectors, consulting practices, and NGOs.
