NYU's Master of Arts in Museum Studies provides an interdisciplinary education blending museum theory with practical experience. Through coursework, research, and mandatory internships, the program offers comprehensive museum training while allowing specialization in areas like art, history, or science. Students benefit from experienced faculty and a strong alumni network that supports professional growth beyond academics.
To earn the 32-credit MA degree, students must complete at least 24 credits within Museum Studies, including five core courses. Three foundational courses explore museum practice's historical and theoretical framework: History and Theory of Museums introduces exhibition development and collection management through Museum Collections and Exhibitions, while Museum Management covers administrative and financial operations. Additionally, students participate in the Museum Studies Research Seminar, write a 50-page thesis, and complete a 200-hour museum internship.
