NYU Journalism's Global & Joint Program Studies offers students intensive journalism education combined with specialized cultural or regional studies through a dual MA degree with one of eight international master's programs. Each small cohort of just 15 students receives comprehensive multimedia training, graduating with both journalistic expertise and deep cultural understanding of their chosen focus area.
Participants in this program pursue joint degrees with NYU's internationally oriented master's programs: Africana Studies, French Studies, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Near Eastern Studies, Russian and Slavic Studies, European and Mediterranean Studies, East Asian Studies, or International Relations. The cohort completes demanding reporting and writing coursework at the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute before delving into their specialization, ultimately producing a substantial 7,000- to 10,000-word journalistic project.

Qualification Requirements
The Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute considers applicants holding a bachelor's degree in any field. A journalism background is not required. Along with the completed application, the applicant must provide one official transcript from each undergraduate or graduate institution attended, three letters of recommendation, preferably from your professors, and two writing samples. These samples should be indicative of the applicant's best overall work and need not have been published. They should include at least one academic paper or senior thesis that demonstrates the student's critical thinking ability and another that showcases the student's writing ability. A statement of purpose, which should adhere to the guidelines listed in the journalism application form, is also required. NYU graduate admission requires four years of prior undergraduate studies.
The GRE exam is not required. For some of our partner programs the GRE is optional and scores will be considered if submitted. See individual program requirements for more information. International applicants must take either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) unless English is their native language or they have completed their undergraduate education at an institution where English is the primary language of instruction. A minimum TOEFL score of 100 on the Internet-based test, equivalent to a score of 250 on the computer-based test or 600 on the paper-based test, is preferred. For the IELTS, a minimum overall band score of at least 7 is recommended.

You must receive your undergraduate degree (U.S. baccalaureate or equivalent) from an institution of recognized standing before enrollment in the Graduate School. Students from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Bangladesh must show completion of both the baccalaureate and master's examinations prior to registration in the Graduate School.
