XE: Experimental Humanities & Social Engagement provides a master's program in Interdisciplinary Studies, tailored for students pursuing research that bridges academic fields, creative expression, and social impact. The curriculum features intimate seminars covering diverse subjects such as environmental and social justice, media analysis, literary criticism, artistic activism, gender and sexuality research, creative writing, cultural anthropology, and global human rights. Beyond XE seminars, students can enroll in half their coursework through other NYU departments. For their final projects, XE candidates may develop scholarly papers or creative works—including literature, films, digital initiatives, or exhibition proposals—while honing their research and writing abilities. This program serves as strong preparation for doctoral studies or careers in creative, academic, and professional fields.
XE: Experimental Humanities & Social Engagement delivers specialized seminars exploring varied disciplines: sexuality and gender research, scientific inquiry, everyday life theories, ethnographic methods, literary analysis, and cross-disciplinary studies of visual arts, photography, and publishing traditions. Students complement their XE coursework by taking half their classes in other NYU departments and programs.
