This program aims to equip students with social science expertise that can positively impact both public and private sectors, particularly benefiting African and African diaspora communities. Offering a foundation in economics and Africana studies, the curriculum explores development economics, political systems, and related social sciences while examining their relevance to Africa and its global diaspora. To obtain the Master of Arts degree, students complete 36 credits across three terms, culminating in either a thesis or a practical internship project applying social science concepts to African contexts. Although designed with African students in mind, the program welcomes all applicants passionate about the intersection of Africana studies and economics.
Housed within the Department of Social and Cultural Analysis, the Africana Studies Program delivers an interdisciplinary MA curriculum examining African and Afro-descendant populations worldwide, with primary focus on these regions: Africa, North America, Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia-Pacific, and the Middle East. Students may specialize in single regions, conduct comparative studies across multiple areas, or sample courses from all five geographical focuses.
The Africana Studies MA serves as excellent preparation for doctoral programs in diverse fields including history, literature, American studies, anthropology, communications, political science, sociology, economics, and cinema studies, while also fostering careers in education, cultural institutions, archival work, and government service.
