The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is an advanced research degree, demonstrating the holder's ability to perform autonomous scholarly investigation. Candidates must possess extensive foundational knowledge in sociology while developing deep expertise in a selected specialization area. The program mandates completion of 72 graduate credits, with a minimum of 32 credits earned through NYU residency. At least 48 credits must be from Sociology coursework, with all required courses demanding a B grade or higher. Students may allocate up to 16 credits for independent study or dissertation work under faculty supervision. Non-sociology courses require approval from the Director of Graduate Studies based on their sociological relevance. Transfer credits from other institutions also need the Director's authorization. Prospective students with prior graduate experience should consult the Director during initial registration to assess potential course requirements.
