A PhD is an advanced research qualification. The core focus of graduate education involves cultivating professional expertise in historical investigation, with most history PhD holders pursuing academic teaching positions. While our department focuses on equipping doctoral candidates for research and instructional roles, we're equally committed to preparing students for diverse career paths such as public history and archival administration.
Our PhD curriculum offers a structured approach to help students gain: (1) comprehensive understanding of their chosen field along with its contemporary debates and scholarship, (2) specialized knowledge in their primary research and teaching concentration, (3) foundational exposure to a secondary discipline, (4) methodological research training, (5) relevant language proficiency, and (6) completion of an original dissertation that makes a meaningful contribution to historical scholarship.

Qualification Requirements
You must receive your undergraduate degree (U.S. baccalaureate or equivalent) from an institution of recognized standing before enrollment in the Graduate School.

For the TOEFL, the Graduate School recommends that the applicant achieve a minimum TOEFL score of 100 on the internet-based test. For the IELTS, a minimum overall band score of at least 7 is recommended.
