Our department is globally recognized as a leading hub for the comprehensive exploration of human expressive traditions across cultures, time periods, and geographic locations. As the sole academic unit merging folklore and ethnomusicology studies, we provide distinctive training in three interconnected domains: critical humanistic research, creative performance practice, and community-oriented scholarship. The doctoral program mandates completion of at least 90 graduate-level credits. Students may apply up to 30 credits from their master's degree toward this requirement. The curriculum includes a minor concentration and language competency demonstrated through either: reading knowledge of two foreign languages, advanced proficiency in one foreign language, or comprehensive mastery of a single foreign language.
