New York University's History Department offers a Ph.D. specialization in Latin American and Caribbean studies. Core faculty members include Barbara Weinstein, Ada Ferrer, Irvin Ibarguen, Alejandro Velasco, and Sinclair Thomson. Though each professor concentrates on different regions (Brazil, the Caribbean, the Andes, and Central America) and themes (slavery, race, revolution, gender, political conflict, and U.S. relations), they collectively emphasize social and cultural history while promoting interdisciplinary and transnational research methods. The history program fosters active dialogue among students and professors studying Latin America, the Caribbean, and related global fields like Atlantic World, African-Diaspora, African, and U.S. history. Beyond the department, NYU's Center for Latin America and Caribbean Studies and the King Juan Carlos Center (which highlights Spanish-speaking cultures) are housed in the same building, providing doctoral candidates with expanded academic and cultural programming opportunities.
