The concepts of race and ethnicity have been persistent historical themes across all societies. While some view them as products of the modern era following the European Enlightenment, others see them as universal concerns spanning all eras and cultures. The UCSB History Department boasts numerous scholars specializing in racial and ethnic studies, with expertise covering regions including the United States, Latin America, Europe, Central Asia, East Asia, the Middle East, the ancient Mediterranean, as well as public history and the history of science. Our university provides exceptional interdisciplinary resources for comparative historical research on race and ethnicity, featuring renowned faculty from departments such as Feminist Studies, Sociology, Religious Studies, Chicana and Chicano Studies, Black Studies, and Asian American Studies (many of whom hold affiliate positions with the History Department).
Our program emphasizes a comparative historical perspective on race and ethnicity, encouraging students to look beyond specific groups, periods, or locations. We aim to equip students with knowledge not only about individual group histories but also about racial and ethnic theories, as well as the parallels, contrasts, and connections between experiences of groups separated by time or geography. A special focus lies in exploring how ethnic studies intersect with other critical areas like gender, class, religion, labor, nation-building, and intellectual history.
