The Institute of Fine Arts focuses on graduate education and cutting-edge research in art history, archaeology, and art conservation techniques. The Institute's PhD Program offers an intensive curriculum for those examining visual arts' cultural significance through object-based analysis and historical-theoretical frameworks. Students benefit from mentorship by distinguished faculty and access to New York's museum resources, conservation experts, archaeological sites, and NYU's international academic network.
This full-time, funded program spans up to six years, requiring completion of 18 courses (72 credits). Students typically enroll in three courses per semester for the first five terms, with the fifth semester including dedicated dissertation proposal development. The sixth semester involves 12 credits focused on oral exam preparation and initial dissertation work. Full-time enrollment exceptions require Graduate Studies Director approval and are granted only for compelling financial or medical circumstances.
