The Music Department provides both major and minor degree options in music. These programs enable students to develop expertise in global music theory, history, and performance while cultivating essential critical thinking and auditory skills required for modern musicians and audiences. The major program includes capstone research opportunities in the senior year.
Our curriculum features diverse, cutting-edge courses covering ethnomusicology, popular music, cultural music studies, and sound research. Numerous classes welcome students from other disciplines. Recent course offerings have included: Post-9/11 Musical Landscapes, Global Music Traditions, NYC's Musical Heritage, Hip-Hop Culture and Politics, and Audio Technology Studies.
Waverly Labs offer digital tools for musical composition and academic research. The department sponsors the Washington Square Contemporary Music Society along with various performance groups and special projects. Supported by departmental funding, majors and minors can receive private instrument lessons and participate in Steinhardt School performance ensembles. Situated in a global cultural hub, our students frequently attend concerts and secure internships with NYC recording studios, music publications, and leading arts institutions.
