The Alexander S. Onassis Program in Hellenic Studies offers students an interdisciplinary exploration of Greek language, literature, history, and politics. The curriculum presents diverse perspectives that illuminate Greece's historical journey through Byzantine, Ottoman, and contemporary periods, examining how the nation has integrated its multifaceted heritage into modern times. The program investigates Greece's cultural connections with Western Europe, the Balkans, the Middle East, and Mediterranean societies, while celebrating its renowned literary and artistic contributions - often considered foundational to Western civilization - within their multicultural frameworks.
The summer program in Athens blends academic coursework on Greek language and culture with immersive experiences showcasing contemporary Greek society. Students can select from various subjects including Greek linguistics, literature, photography, theater, political history, urban studies, and archaeology. Instruction takes place at our modern Kolonaki facility in central Athens. The program features guided city walks, museum visits, cultural performances, and weekend trips to significant archaeological sites and picturesque islands. Summer courses fulfill major or minor requirements equivalent to regular semester classes.
This academic track enables students to examine medieval and modern Greece through social science lenses. Participants may focus specifically on history or political studies, or design a customized interdisciplinary approach with guidance from the undergraduate studies director.
