This joint interdisciplinary program, offered by the Economics and Mathematics Departments, enables students to explore economic principles alongside key mathematical disciplines including analysis, algebra, probability, statistics, mathematical modeling, and financial mathematics.
The Economics Department equips students to analyze decision-making processes at individual and collective levels, examine market and economic structures, and understand interregional dynamics within the global marketplace. Despite its size, the department maintains strong faculty-student relationships. Through collaboration with research-active professors, students gain insights into both economic theory fundamentals and their practical applications. They also have opportunities to pursue independent research projects. Honors candidates must complete a thesis under faculty guidance.
Economics graduates enjoy diverse career pathways. The program provides excellent preparation for advanced studies in economics, business administration, or public policy. Those pursuing professional degrees benefit from the rigorous analytical training that supports success in fields like law and medicine. Employers and graduate programs value economics majors for their quantitative, qualitative, and analytical reasoning abilities. NYU's urban location offers unique advantages, with students frequently securing positions at Wall Street firms, the United Nations, or across corporate, financial, government, and nonprofit sectors.
