The combined data science and mathematics program equips students with practical data science techniques while providing a solid foundation in the mathematical principles underlying large-scale data analysis. This program empowers learners to implement mathematical concepts to address real-world problems requiring data-driven and computational approaches.
This interdisciplinary degree consists of eighteen courses (totaling 72 credits) jointly administered by the Center for Data Science and Courant's Mathematics Department.
In today's world, data science has become the essential language of our era and a fundamental component of liberal arts education. Proficiency in data science is now increasingly mandatory for graduates entering professional fields, public service, or academic research. As diverse academic fields, business sectors, and news organizations increasingly depend on data-based decisions, investigations, and evidence, the ability to critically interpret data - along with the capacity to analyze information and produce new insights - has become essential for engaged global citizenship, scientific inquiry, and leadership roles.
Both major and minor students gain practical experience working with authentic datasets. The program focuses not on job-specific training, but rather cultivates data science competencies within a comprehensive framework of scientific and theoretical understanding, fostering deeper inquiry, innovative knowledge creation, and rigorous discovery processes.
