Students in the Broadcast Journalism Concentration develop essential journalism skills through a mix of theoretical learning and practical experience, combining classroom instruction, hands-on production, and project-based assignments. The initial phase establishes core digital journalism competencies, teaching students to investigate, create, film, compose, present, and assemble news content for television and online platforms. Participants complete multiple pre-recorded news segments using both single and multi-camera setups, edited with Avid Media Composer. Later, students apply these skills to NYFA News, our biweekly news program, gaining production experience by rotating through roles such as anchor, reporter, writer, producer, and director.
Assignments feature diverse formats including the VO (voice-over), where students combine visuals and ambient sound to craft narratives, and the News Package, requiring students to propose story ideas, gather footage, conduct interviews, write scripts, edit, and narrate. Participants also master on-camera stand-ups and create visual elements like lower-third graphics and location identifiers. The Interview Profile project hones students' ability to select compelling subjects and locations while refining questioning techniques to uncover newsworthy content. For the Long-form Story, students produce in-depth reports exceeding six minutes, employing narrative techniques to develop complex stories with multiple subjects.
