Qualification Requirements

Graduate degree applicants must hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S. college or university or the equivalent degree from a foreign college or university. Applicants in the process of completing the bachelor's degree may apply for admission. Admission to the program requires completion of the bachelor's degree.
Complete your Artist Statement
The New School's Master of Fine Arts program in Contemporary Theatre and Performance seeks artists with the capacity for interdisciplinary practice who authentically prioritize innovation, collaboration, and social engagement in the making of art that is relevant to the world. Please provide a personal artistic statement discussing your perspective on these themes and addressing how these values, combined with your experiences and unique background, inform your artistic aspirations. (600-750 words, to be submitted with online application)
Submit Two Letters of Recommendation
Two letters of recommendation from professional and/or academic references are required. Recommendations must be submitted by recommenders directly via the online application portal. Instructions are included in the online application.
Submit Your Artist Portfolio
All applicants to the MFA in Contemporary Theatre and Performance are required to submit an Artist Portfolio. Successful applicants will provide evidence of:

A high level of artistic practice
An interest in challenging and expanding one's creative practice
An interest in or capacity for socially engaged artistry, interdisciplinary approaches, and/or technology-based innovation
Prepare for Your Portfolio Conference
Portfolio Conferences are the performance or presentation portion of our admission process, offered by invitation to applicants who pass the first round of application reviews.
Submit College Transcripts
Applicants must upload an unofficial transcript, mark sheet, or academic record for each institution (even if you didnt receive a degree) in the Academic History section of the online application.
