The Media and Culture program examines both theoretical concepts and practical applications where politics, economics, journalism, entertainment, public policy, and cultural contexts intersect. This specialization investigates how media interacts with democratic systems globally, giving balanced attention to the impact of both governmental and private entities on media landscapes in democratic and authoritarian nations alike.
Students in the Media and Culture program develop diverse analytical and technical competencies by studying topics like media's role in democracy, propaganda techniques, human rights issues, along with hands-on training in documentary filmmaking, video production for NGO advocacy, social media strategies, and photographic storytelling. Additional coursework is available through the university's Media Studies department.
The program offers extensive research and experiential learning opportunities, leveraging New York City's wealth of nonprofit organizations, international agencies, media corporations, and through specialized international field programs focused on media studies.
