The Writing specialization in Lang's Literary Studies program explores the power of words through both analytical and artistic lenses. Students select a primary and secondary focus area (fiction, nonfiction, or poetry) and advance through structured workshop sequences, culminating in a final semester dedicated to producing an extended work in their chosen genre.
As part of this program, Writing students critically examine poetic, fictional, nonfictional, and dramatic texts across diverse cultures and historical contexts. Through both literature and writing classes, they employ craft-based analysis (the skill of precise thought and expression) to evaluate assigned readings, their own compositions, and peers' work. Students apply both logical and creative thinking to recognize and address artistic challenges.
The creative writing curriculum fosters sophisticated language skills by:
Studying groundbreaking works of literary excellence
Interacting with texts through multiple creative and critical viewpoints
Cultivating a distinctive personal writing style and forms of written expression
