The Master of Arts program provides three completion pathways: thesis, comprehensive exam, or applied project. Each track mandates a minimum of 36 credits, incorporating both Communication Studies courses and at least one interdisciplinary course. For the thesis path, students complete 30 course credits plus 6 thesis credits (COMM 5999 Master's Thesis), culminating in an oral defense. The comprehensive exam option involves 36 course credits followed by six-hour written exams and an oral defense. The applied project track requires 30 course credits plus 6 project credits (COMM 5994 MA Project), concluding with an oral defense. All pathways share a requirement of at least 30 credits in Communication Studies coursework.

Graduate Admissions
Regular admission to the Graduate School requires an undergraduate minimum GPA of 3.0, although our department does not require students to submit GRE scores. The department requires the following information in addition to the online application: 3 letters of recommendation, a 750 word statement of purpose, at least one scholarly writing sample, and a GPA of at least a 3.0.
