Marine Biology and Coastal Sciences explore the diverse aquatic ecosystems interconnected by water. This field of study includes freshwater bodies like lakes and rivers, as well as estuaries and coastal marine environments. These areas are vital for countless plant and animal species, yet they face threats from human impact. Students choosing this major seek to comprehend the interactions between flora, fauna, and people, along with methods to conserve and rehabilitate these precious ecosystems.
This interdisciplinary program focuses on four fundamental sciences: biology, geology, chemistry, and physics. Graduates will gain the skills needed for careers in research, environmental consulting, education, government agencies (such as the EPA), and non-profit sectors. The program also provides a strong foundation for advanced graduate studies. The coursework is tailored for students with a background in high school biology, chemistry, physics, and three years of college-prep math.
Career Paths: Marine Biologist, Zoologist, Wildlife Biologist, Service Worker, Biochemist, Conservation Scientist, Forester, Environmental Scientist, Microbiologist, Veterinarian.
