The Music Education curriculum offers two undergraduate programs: the BMus in Music (School and Community Settings) without certification and the BMus in Music Education with certification. Both options feature classical tracks (guitar, instrumental, keyboard, and voice) and jazz tracks (guitar, instrumental, and keyboard). Graduates without certification can pursue teaching in private institutions or explore careers in music or other fields. Those who earn certification become eligible to teach in New Jersey's public schools. The core curriculum for both programs follows a four-tier structure: Students fulfill liberal arts requirements covering subjects like history, foreign languages, and modern societal, psychological, and technological topics. Essential components include applied music study, keyboard proficiency, ensemble participation, music theory, and music history. The program emphasizes music education pedagogy, equipping students with classroom teaching methods and skills for directing choral and instrumental programs. Additionally, students explore broader educational concepts, including teaching philosophies, educational psychology, democratic education principles, and critical thinking development.
