The Bachelor of Arts in Music Therapy program at Montclair State University, accredited by the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA), typically spans 4.5 years. This specialized training blends musical study, psychology, and clinical music therapy practice. Beyond standard classes, students must complete a six-month, full-time supervised internship at one of over 150 AMTA-approved sites nationwide. While some students choose local placements, others opt to gain experience in different regions of the country. The immersive internship offers daily guidance to hone clinical abilities and culminate academic preparation, with some positions offering compensation or housing. Music Therapy involves collaborative sessions between clients and certified therapists, using musical interventions to enhance both psychological and physiological well-being. Therapists design tailored musical activities to help clients achieve diverse therapeutic objectives. They serve diverse populations across all age groups, either as part of healthcare teams or in private practice, creating customized treatment plans. Music therapists practice in various settings including hospitals, mental health facilities, schools, hospice care, correctional institutions, and community programs. The Cali School supports graduates in exploring career pathways within this growing field.
