The Master of Science in Optics and Photonics is a cross-disciplinary program overseen by the Optics Program Committee, involving three key departments: Physics, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Chemistry and Biochemistry. Applicants enroll directly in the Optics and Photonics Graduate Program, with admission routed through one of these departments determined by faculty mentorship alignment and student preferences.
This specialized degree differs from conventional departmental graduate programs by mandating coursework spanning multiple disciplines, requiring study in at least two participating departments. This structure enables deeper exploration of optical theory and practical applications than traditional single-discipline degrees allow. Every optics student receives guidance from a faculty advisor within one of the three departments, supported by a supervisory committee comprising faculty from at least two of the program's collaborating departments.
