Effective counseling practice is rooted in and directed by theoretical foundations. The school counseling program focuses on comprehensive understanding of clients' developmental stages and social environments. In-depth exploration of theoretical methods for individual, family, and group therapy forms a core component of the curriculum. Throughout their practicum, students receive close guidance as they apply their knowledge of clients and counseling theories. They gain experience working with children in school settings as well as adult and elderly populations. This supervised training extends and intensifies during the internship phase. By completing their internship, students fulfill CACREP's educational requirements for school counseling certification.
Given that school counseling demands significant professional maturity and interpersonal competence, the program incorporates multiple hands-on learning courses aimed at enhancing students' personal growth, relational abilities, and professional mindset. These courses involve self-reflection and skill development in areas such as personal ethics, professional challenges, interpersonal connections, and group interactions. They provide platforms for students to build strong peer relationships through sharing personal experiences, active listening, constructive feedback, and simulated counseling scenarios.
