The Master of Engineering degree differs from the Master of Science degree in two key curriculum aspects: The M. Eng. program doesn't mandate a professional paper or thesis. Typically, M. Eng. candidates are either working engineers or students seeking additional credits for professional certification. Those already in the field bring hands-on engineering knowledge and capstone project familiarity. For recent graduates, Montana State University's senior design project (and similar programs at other accredited institutions) already meets the rigor of most professional papers. Removing the thesis requirement allows students to focus on specialized coursework in their chosen discipline.
Applicants must present evidence of graduation with a bachelor's degree in engineering with ability to maintain a "B" average. Graduates in other fields may be accepted, but generally these students have to make up background material in certain subject areas.
