The Mathematics Education specialization within the Ph.D. in Mathematics program integrates advanced mathematical studies with educational research methodologies, both quantitative and qualitative. This track prepares students for careers involving teaching, scholarly inquiry, and leadership roles specifically targeting K-12 mathematics education. The curriculum emphasizes K-12 mathematics pedagogy, covering instructional strategies, curriculum design, evaluation techniques, and educator training programs. Program alumni frequently secure academic appointments in mathematics departments, where they contribute to teacher education and conduct research on K-12 mathematics learning. Prospective students should have or acquire K-12 classroom teaching experience, which may be obtained through internship opportunities.
An earned master’s degree in mathematics, statistics, or mathematics education, including graduate-level mathematics coursework in topics such as algebra and analysis. Applicants with a strong undergraduate degree in mathematics teaching may start in the M.S. in Mathematics program and earn an M.S. before continuing on to the Ph.D., usually after 2 years.
