The Doctor of Philosophy in Education program caters to graduate students pursuing academic or research careers in higher education institutions or specialized research organizations requiring advanced educational research expertise. This degree equips candidates with specialized disciplinary knowledge and research capabilities through scholarly experiences that form the essential foundation for success in university faculty roles and research-oriented positions. The Curriculum and Instruction specialization within the PhD in Education program focuses on six key research domains aligned with faculty expertise: (1) Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, (2) STEM Education Research, (3) K-20 Educational Pathways, (4) Digital and Distance Learning, (5) Teaching Methodologies and Educator Development, and (6) Educational Measurement, Assessment, and Research Methodology. The program particularly emphasizes Montana-specific educational challenges, including collaboration with rural communities and Native American populations on state-level educational initiatives. Alumni of this doctoral program will possess the expertise to meaningfully influence data-informed decision-making processes aimed at enhancing educational systems throughout Montana and other regions.
Applicants must provide official transcripts verifying all Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree coursework.
English proficiency scores: TOEFL [80], IELTS [level 6.5], or PTE [54], are necessary for applicants who are not U.S. citizens and not from countries where English is the official language.
Applications to the PhD programs are reviewed once per year at the April 1 deadline. Applications received after the deadline may be reviewed for acceptance on a case-by-case basis. Fall Semester: April 1st
