Graduate programs in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction concentrate on the core teaching and learning processes that form the foundation of education. These programs equip students for careers in K-12 schools, higher education, research institutions, educational service organizations, and corporate training environments. The PhD program offers specialized pathways including: arts education, cultural studies and teaching, elementary education, educational technology, reading and writing instruction, STEM education, language acquisition programs, and social studies instruction. Applicants should demonstrate research interests in education or allied disciplines, designing a course of study that develops their ability to conduct academic research within their chosen specialization area.
The preferred undergraduate GPA for admittance to the program is 3.00.
A master's degree is preferred for admission to some of the tracks within the PhD program, but it is not always required.
Other requirements to be completed before admission:
Generally a bachelor's degree with licensure and/or teaching experience fulfills the requirement. For some areas, however, there is no equivalent undergraduate program. In that case, 15 to 20 credits of undergraduate coursework determined acceptable by faculty is adequate.
