Our graduate program combines rigorous academic study with innovative research opportunities. Students can pursue a master's degree with either a thesis or non-thesis track, while doctoral candidates must complete an in-depth dissertation and publish original findings. We offer graduate studies in geology and geophysics at both master of science (thesis and non-thesis) and Ph.D. levels. These programs aim to build a strong foundation in geological principles, geochemistry, and geophysical concepts. Research forms a core component of each curriculum, with doctoral students expected to make novel scientific contributions. The department boasts extensive research facilities for geological, geochemical, and geophysical investigations. Students regularly collaborate with multiple disciplines including mining engineering, petroleum engineering, environmental engineering, and biological sciences. Our faculty and graduate students frequently engage in joint research projects with other university departments and international institutions. Partnerships with local organizations such as the Missouri Geological Survey, USGS National Geospatial Technical Operations Center, and Mark Twain National Forest Service provide additional research and internship possibilities. Collaborative opportunities also exist with regional mining, petroleum, and industrial companies, allowing research projects to extend beyond our immediate faculty expertise and available equipment.
