Our institution has undergone multiple name transitions: originally founded as the Missouri School of Mines (MSM) in 1870, it was renamed the University of Missouri - Rolla (UMR) in 1964 before adopting its current title, Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T), in 2008.
While English courses have been available at our university for over a century, the English major wasn't introduced until 1967. Initially housed within the Department of Humanities, English gained its own dedicated department in 1984. The Humanities department's inaugural chair was Dr. Jim C. Pogue, while Dr. Jim Wise served as the first chair of the English Department - both distinguished English professors.
Missouri S&T has provided technical writing instruction for more than 100 years, though the Bachelor's and Master's programs in technical communication are more recent additions, established in 2005. Around this period, the English Department expanded its scope and became the Department of English and Technical Communication.
