The Department of Classical & Modern Languages and Literatures (CMLL) at Mississippi State University offers a vibrant Master's program in Foreign Languages, covering French, German, and Spanish. Graduate studies emphasize literature, cultural studies, linguistics, and film, alongside comprehensive training in language teaching methods. The program features a highly adaptable, interdisciplinary curriculum. Students pursuing their M.A. can simultaneously earn a teaching certification through our specialized Pathway to Licensure in World Languages program.
Most M.A. candidates serve as Teaching Assistants within the department, receiving tuition coverage and a living stipend. Approximately 30% of our alumni enter teaching careers at secondary or college levels, while 25% continue their education in doctoral programs. Some graduates have also secured international opportunities after completing their degree. Faculty members provide personalized academic and career guidance, tailoring the program to each student's professional goals. Graduate students may assist in organizing summer study abroad programs alongside faculty or participate in these programs for credit with financial support. Qualification Requirements
The Graduate School requires that all applicants have a minimum 2.75 GPA (or equivalent) on the last two years of undergraduate coursework. Provisional admission is possible for students not meeting this requirement.
All applicants will be required to submit their application, along with a statement of purpose (outlining their reasons for wishing to study in the department and plans following completion of the M.A.), three academic letters of reference, unofficial transcripts for all undergraduate and graduate coursework (official copies will be required upon admission), and the application fee. GRE scores are accepted but not required by CMLL.
International students from non-TOEFL exempt countries must have a TOEFL score of 54 iBT to be admitted. Students scoring below 79 iBT will be required to complete ESL coursework upon admission and might not be eligible for a Teaching Assistantship.
