The Department of Sociology provides Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs. Our longstanding focus areas include Criminology, Rural Sociology, Social Demography and Population Studies, along with Social Inequality and Stratification. Faculty members specialize in both sophisticated quantitative and qualitative research methods. We boast one of the most substantial clusters of sociological knowledge in the Southern United States, demonstrated by our extensive graduate faculty and student body, the career achievements of our PhD graduates, our publication record, substantial grant funding, and top-tier research facilities. Numerous financial support options are available for students, with nearly all qualified candidates receiving assistance over the past ten years. Support comes through teaching assistantships and research assistantships funded by faculty grants or affiliated research centers like the National Strategic Planning and Research Center (nSPARC), the Research and Curriculum Unit (RCU), and the Social Science Research Center (SSRC). Additional fellowship opportunities are offered through the SSRC, the Graduate School, and the Office of Research and Economic Development.
