Choosing history as the cornerstone of your Mississippi State University education offers numerous practical benefits. As a history major, you'll develop versatile skills applicable to virtually any profession: conducting thorough research, synthesizing vast amounts of data, honing analytical thinking, crafting compelling arguments, and mastering clear written communication.

Beyond career preparation, history serves as the essential language for comprehending all human societies, including your own. The past functions as our collective laboratory for examining the human experience - the sole reference point we possess. We inhabit a world shaped by prior generations' decisions; understanding these historical choices becomes crucial for making informed decisions today.

Ultimately, you should study history because it fascinates you. If you cherish humanity's diverse narratives and wish to contribute to their telling, then our history program is your ideal choice.
Mississippi State history graduates access diverse career paths. Many become educators, public historians, or preservation specialists, continuing their education in graduate programs for history, education, library science, archival studies, anthropology, or similar disciplines.

These represent just some applications of the critical thinking and writing abilities cultivated through our history curriculum. Our alumni also become lawyers, policy experts, and public health professionals. Others have joined the U.S. Marshal Service, operated businesses, entered religious vocations, or pursued medical degrees. A history degree doesn't restrict your post-graduation options - it enriches any career with historical perspective, research proficiency, analytical rigor, and writing expertise gained through historical study.
