The Theatre concentration offers students a comprehensive curriculum designed to cultivate versatile, inclusive storytellers while maintaining flexibility for exploring new disciplines and forging unique paths. Our philosophy centers on student-driven education, with MSU offering abundant chances to experience every facet of theatrical production.
Theatre majors at MSU engage in classes covering acting, technical theater, playwriting, and direction, supplemented by specialized courses in their preferred areas. Through Theatre MSU, our production company, students gain hands-on experience with four annual Mainstage shows, providing diverse performance and technical roles. Many theatre students participate in Mainstage productions—either onstage or behind the scenes—as early as their freshman year. Additional involvement opportunities exist through campus groups like Blackfriars Drama Society, Lab Rats Comedy (MSU's improv team), and The Scene (a student film organization), further expanding creative outlets.
As an exclusively undergraduate program, MSU enables students to develop impressive performance or technical portfolios before graduation. By junior year, many secure competitive summer apprenticeships, with alumni progressing to touring companies, regional theaters, education roles, or prestigious graduate programs. The program's broad foundation also prepares students for careers in law, business, themed entertainment, or film. Those focusing on Theatre can complement their studies with courses across Communications and Arts & Sciences, equipping them for diverse professional paths while fostering civic engagement.
