The Japanese studies curriculum provides foundational coursework for students aiming to transfer and complete a bachelor's degree in Japanese. Those pursuing this associate degree or transfer pathway may need to fulfill supplementary requirements or electives specific to their intended university, as California State Universities and University of California campuses maintain distinct admission criteria and major preparation standards. Prospective students are advised to consult with a MiraCosta College academic counselor to determine necessary coursework and create a customized transfer roadmap. Graduates of this program will achieve Intermediate Mid proficiency according to ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) standards and N4 level competency on the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test), while developing cultural understanding of Japanese-speaking communities in relation to both their personal background and mainstream American culture.
