The Child Development program examines the social, emotional, cognitive, linguistic, and physical/motor development of children from prenatal stages through teenage years. Participants enroll in child development classes to pursue certificates or permits, work toward an associate degree, prepare for university transfer, or enhance professional skills. Career pathways encompass diverse fields serving children and families, including infant/toddler care, preschool instruction (including Head Start programs), K-12 education, special education for young children, program management, school counseling, child psychology, advocacy work, social services, and community programs. Learners can obtain an associate degree by completing a certificate program along with MiraCosta College's general education requirements for an Associate in Arts degree (refer to Associate Degrees section).
