The Master of Science in Ethnic and Multicultural Studies program launched in fall 2002. This graduate program equips students for advanced professional roles beyond what a bachelor's degree offers. To earn the M.S. degree, students must: 1) maintain at least a B average in coursework, 2) successfully complete a comprehensive exam, and 3) fulfill writing requirements through either a Thesis Plan or 4) an Alternate Plan Paper.
The curriculum focuses on diverse theories of race/ethnicity and research methodologies, including courses like Ethnic Studies 401/501: Applied Cultural Research and Ethnic Studies 402W/502: Ethnic Research Methods/Skills. These classes introduce qualitative, quantitative, and evaluation research techniques, along with tools like Qualtrics software.
Minnesota State University-Mankato stands out as one of the Midwest's few institutions offering this specialization, and remains the sole Upper Midwest university providing a Master of Science in this field. The program maintains its leadership by advancing scholarship that examines historical and current racial/ethnic dynamics across national and global settings.
