The West College of Education's undergraduate teacher certification program operates through its Center for the Professional Development of Teachers (CPDT). This collaborative center brings together the Gordon T. and Ellen West College of Education with partner public schools. Professional education courses and the majority of reading instruction occur in field-based settings within specially designated classrooms at our professional development schools.

The Gordon T. and Ellen West College of Education provides certification pathways for elementary, secondary, and all-level educators, along with degree programs including a Bachelor of Science Education (BSE) in Sports and Leisure Studies, Early Childhood Studies and Early Care, and a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Substance Abuse Counseling. Aspiring elementary educators (covering Early Childhood through Grade 6 or Grades 4-8) earn a Bachelor of Science in Education (BSE). Future secondary teachers (Grades 7-12) can opt for a BSE in Secondary Education with specializations in Mathematics, Science, English Language Arts and Reading, or Social Studies, or select a Bachelor of Science/Arts with relevant teaching majors/minors. All-level certification candidates (K-12) pursue either a Bachelor of Fine Arts or Bachelor of Music with appropriate teaching specializations, while physical education students follow a BSE program with a physical education major.
