An ideal setting for exploring the natural world awaits here. Michigan Technological University's diverse habitats and rich biodiversity create the perfect environment for studying ecosystems and biological processes. We're nestled within one of the most extensive forested regions in the eastern U.S., with exceptional proximity to numerous water sources, including Lake Superior - the planet's largest freshwater body.
Graduate students in our forestry program investigate critical topics like climate change, photosynthetic mechanisms, microbial interactions, and beyond. Our expertise spans ecological studies, forest management, genetic research, conservation policies, and wildlife biology - highlighted by our ongoing Isle Royale predator-prey research, the nation's longest-running study of its kind.
We actively contribute to the Ecosystem Science Center and participate in the university-wide Michigan Forest Biomaterials Initiative. Our faculty collaborate with various interdisciplinary research centers across campus, including the Life Science and Technology Institute, Michigan Tech Research Institute, Sustainable Futures Institute, and Transportation Institute. Additionally, we work closely with the USDA Forest Service's Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science. Our research extends to protected areas including national forests and parks.
