This focus area aims to cultivate scholar-practitioners dedicated to improving educational approaches in both school settings and wider communities. It tackles agricultural and natural resource challenges through educational practice, theory, research, and policy. Collaborative opportunities exist to work with schools, community members, government entities, nonprofits, and Michigan State University Extension to create tailored educational initiatives.
The CSUS graduate program caters to students passionate about community sustainability, whether locally or globally. Faculty, staff, and students typically concentrate on community food systems, environmental resources, tourism and recreation, civic education, and global development. These interconnected themes also intersect with sustainable tourism and protected area management, which are central to the department's other graduate programs. Our work spans both domestic and international contexts, with many faculty and students engaged in global development projects.
