This focus area explores challenges surrounding sustainable and inclusive food and farming systems. Academic programs and research initiatives equip students to participate in community-driven projects that transform food networks and expand agriculture's societal impact through learning, partnership, and public involvement. The area aims to incorporate social and communal considerations into agricultural production while connecting farming to health, leisure, environmental stewardship, local growth, ethical considerations, and governmental policies.
The CSUS graduate curriculum caters to students passionate about community sustainability, whether locally or globally. Generally, faculty, researchers, and graduate students in this program concentrate on community-based food systems, environmental resources, tourism and recreation networks, educational outreach, and global development. These interconnected themes frequently intersect with sustainable tourism and conservation management, which form the core of the department's additional master's and doctoral programs. Our work in these fields extends across both domestic and international arenas, with many faculty and students engaged in global development projects.
