Students should pursue courses offering a comprehensive foundation in biological and physical sciences alongside specialized training. The PhD program is designed to deliver an excellent education in crop and soil science, preparing graduates with research, teaching, and extension capabilities for careers requiring a doctoral degree. The Department of Plant, Soil and Microbial Sciences mandates that all graduate students engage in substantial teaching or extension work and demonstrate competence in writing and presentation skills as part of their studies. This teaching/extension component should be a valuable, relevant educational experience. Students who fulfilled this requirement during their CSS Master's program are exempt from repeating it. While earning a master's degree before entering a doctoral program is often recommended, it's not compulsory. Those aiming for a doctorate without a master's must first complete 30 semester credits beyond their bachelor's degree as master's candidates, after which they may request a status change to PhD through a formal letter to the Graduate Programs Committee.
