This focus area explores challenges surrounding sustainable and inclusive food production and agriculture. Academic programs and research initiatives equip students to participate in community-driven projects that transform food networks and establish agriculture's broader societal impact through learning, partnerships, and public involvement. The curriculum bridges social considerations with farming practices, connecting agriculture to health, leisure activities, environmental stewardship, local growth, ethical considerations, and governmental policies.
The PhD in Community Sustainability empowers scholars to develop innovative solutions addressing the dynamic challenges facing our ecosystems and food production networks. The CSUS graduate curriculum caters to students passionate about sustainable communities, whether locally or globally. Faculty, researchers, and graduate candidates in this program typically concentrate on food systems, environmental conservation, tourism and recreation, education and public participation, and global development. These interconnected themes frequently intersect with sustainable tourism and conservation management, which are central to other graduate programs within the department. Our work extends across both national and international contexts, with many faculty and students engaged in global development projects.
