Biochemistry explores the chemical processes within biological molecules, including proteins, nucleic acids, polysaccharides, and various bioactive compounds like vitamins, cofactors, hormones, pharmaceuticals, and sugars. Our department's researchers and students investigate these molecules using diverse methodologies. With nearly 20 faculty members specializing in biological sciences, our program encompasses an extensive array of research initiatives. Current investigations span multiple areas: understanding plant starch synthesis mechanisms, examining membrane fusion and HIV infection processes, studying eukaryotic transcription initiation, developing anticancer treatments, applying mass spectrometry and ultrafast laser spectroscopy to biological photosensors and protein folding, exploring protein engineering and color perception, and utilizing protein crystallography alongside NMR spectroscopy techniques.
